Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old at Long Beach in California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her life, but was able to spend summers with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
